RIFFX By Crédit Mutuel Rankings: France’s Favorite Artists and Songs of the Last 20 Years

  2min

As part of Crédit Mutuel’s celebrations to mark its 20th year of supporting musicians and music lovers, the RIFFX By Crédit Mutuel platform announces the results of an exclusive survey conducted with YouGov* to choose the artists and songs that have marked the last two decades.

Johnny Hallyday (44% of the votes), Jean-Jacques Goldman (42%) and Stromae (32%) top the rankings of male French-speaking singers who have left their mark on the last 20 years.
While Johnny Hallyday released nine studio albums between 2002 and 2018, each of which reached Number One in the French album charts, Jean-Jacques Goldman last released a studio album back in 2001. His Chansons pour les pieds sold a total of 1.6 million copies. Stromae, with his albums released in 2010 (Cheese) and 2013 (Racine Carré), has established himself as a leading artist in only 10 years.

First and second among French-speaking female artists were Céline Dion (51% of the votes), the diva with 125 million album sales, and Mylène Farmer (41%), the singer who can sell out the Stade de France stadium in less than an hour. Zazie (25%) also scored highly, in third place. New stars are not far behind, with Angèle and Louane taking fourth and fifth place, respectively.

Formidable” and “Papaoutai” by Stromae were voted the “Best Songs of the Last 20 Years”. Indochine’s “J’ai demandé à la lune” was ranked third. We have to look all the way down to seventh place, with Adele’s 2011 hit “Someone Like You”, to find the first non-French song in the rankings.

Barely 30 years old, Vianney - the new coach on The Voice and voted the best male artist in the “Victoires de la musique” 2016 awards - was voted “the artist who will leave his mark on the next 20 years”. Gims, 34, and Angèle, 25, ranked second and third in this category.
